Why Dummy Text?
1. Lorem Ipsum is an extremely old and valuable piece of Latin text that cannot be afforded to be lost due to careless memory. Hence, the more people that utilise the text, the better. In turn these people will spread the use to other people who may or may not have heard of Lorem Ipsum. Making it a good idea to link to the lipsum.com site to encourage exploration and widespread use.
2. Lorem Ipsum is a useful visual device. The viewer is not distracted by what the designer may have written (and depending on the designer's competence, may or may not be distracting due to bad English skills). It also saves the designer thinking time to fill up at least 600px of vertical space.
3. Lorem Ipsum is fast, cheap, fairly random, and clean. It takes an average of 4.7 seconds to generate however many paragraphs/words/sentences of lorem ipsum that you require. It is free. As in, no money involved. "Random" implies that you won't get the same pattern of paragraphs. Wrong. You have a limited amount of lorem ipsum text, so it will have to be recycled. Even if the text has to be reused, it's okay. The text is clean. No swear words, no ugly random "HALO U R NOOBZ" in the middle of nowhere.
4. Lorem Ipsum is popular. Many designers use it, for the above reasons as well as peer pressure. The theory of peer pressure states that by knowing everyone else uses it, you are influenced by their decision and will want to use lorem ipsum as well.
5. Have you ever previewed a site layout and found the text that the designer writes extremely annoying? It's populated with text smilies, has all sorts of um's and ah's, and doesn't relate to the layout half the time. Lorem Ipsum solves the problem by being unintelligible to most human beings.
